Out of the Box
Rachel King and Patrick Timmons are Fine Art graduates of the University of Northampton who take on the challenging issues of spirituality and the environment through the medium of painting and sculpture. The spiritual is rarely represented in contemporary art, it is however a very popular and increasingly growing genre.
Patrick's work is simply about enjoying the moment, trying to view the world as simply as we did when we were children. Artists have often been concerned with primitives, madness and innocence perhaps in a natural response to a stressed angst that they feel in society, things have become too complicated. Art shouldn't necessarily be difficult or profound it can be simply an appreciation of the pattern of flour on a work surface, a glimpse of a reflection in an oil spillage; inherent in art are feelings of mortality and wonder because they record fleeting moments of our time. Patrick's recent work includes figurative statues in resin and clay, and oil paintings that suggest the essence of nature in the gestural mark. Patrick has had successful exhibitions in Hull, York, Liverpool and currently teaches art at Moulton College.
Rachel's work looks at the development of spiritual concepts and reflects upon the connection between all life. Her recent practice is inspired by the study of organic form and the connections between nature and culture. In the current climate of consumerism and awareness of the need for conservation, recycling seems to play a vital role in preserving our natural environment. We tend to see ourselves as separate from nature and therefore at liberty to exploit it. The result is that we destroy the very ground of our existence, we are nature and our bodies obey the same laws. In this context cardboard (a substance that typifies our throw-away society) reveals that it can also become art. Rachel has been inspired by artists such as Chris Drury, David Mach, Alex Gray and Susan Seddon Boulet.
